Mark Zuckerberg of Meta declares that the era of Artificial General Intelligence, where AI surpasses human capabilities, is on the verge of arrival.

Mark Zuckerberg, Meta’s CEO, is making a monumental move with a $10 billion investment in Meta’s computing infrastructure, signaling a dedicated push towards Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) development. This strategic move aligns with Meta’s goal of unifying its two AI research initiatives and achieving general intelligence that can surpass human capabilities across various demanding tasks.

In a recorded Instagram message, Zuckerberg emphasized the significance of building full general intelligence to power the next era of services. Unlike current AI systems, AGI holds the promise of nuanced comprehension and contextual understanding akin to human intelligence, enabling versatile problem-solving.

The pursuit of AGI has been likened to transformative milestones such as electricity or fire, with industry leaders stressing the need for collective efforts to mitigate associated risks. Zuckerberg’s revelation of Meta’s acquisition of 350,000 Nvidia H100 graphics processing units (GPUs), among the world’s most powerful, underscores the commitment to advanced AI model training. This substantial addition will more than double Meta’s computing power for AI training, aiming to reach an equivalent of 600,000 H100 GPUs in total by the end of the year.

The Nvidia H100, a crucial component in AI model training, plays a key role in Meta’s projects like “Llama 3,” a response to ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini. Zuckerberg teased a future roadmap, indicating Meta’s ambition to develop a future AGI system.

As Meta positions itself at the forefront of AGI research, this strategic investment underscores its commitment to shaping the future of artificial intelligence. This move places Meta in a pivotal role in the industry’s quest for general intelligence, marking a significant milestone in technological advancements.
